Our Tomato Plants

Okay, I am a total looser, but I have to show off my tomato plants. I have never in my life had so much success growing tomatoes. I have tried since Brad and I were married to grow a small garden. Unfortunately we never got much from my pathetic attempts, but this year I decided to try something different with my tomatoes. I took old laundry detergent buckets and drilled four or five small holes in the bottoms. I then placed a couple of rocks around the holes so I knew they could drain excess water out. I finished them off by adding good garden soil with a 6 month fertilizer in it and planted the tomato plants. I wish I would have taken a picture of the plants when I first planted them. They were only 6" tall at best. We always spend Mother's Day weekend planting flowers and other plants. So you can see that these plants were not planted really early. They have done wonderful. I have not seen any other tomatoes that are even close to the size of my plants. Even my Mom, who always has a great garden, doesn't have plants that look like mine. Just check them out.

Look close and you can see all the blossoms.

Look at how big my tomatoes already are!

Shortly after I planted my tomatoes, my neighbors (The Randall's) gave me a watermelon plant. I had a bag of soil left so I thought I would plant it in a container too. It seemed to be taking its sweet time growing, but my Mom told me that melons do that. Then all of a sudden it too has taken off. I am so hoping that we get a few watermelons. I'll keep you posted. Here is a picture of our little watermelon plant too.

I have this little gardener inside of me that so wants to find it's way out. For some reason I can't seem to figure it all out. I am hoping that my plants continue to do well so I have some encouragement to keep trying. I do have to say, so far so good this year. I love seeing something coming out of hard work.

What a great idea. I'm going to try that next year. My dad always says to get the water to the roots instead of spraying the tops, the bucket would totally help with that. Good job and thanks so much for sharing.

O.k., so that's not even fair! I will have to post a picture of my pathetic tomato plants that are in my garden right now...sooooo sad! Every day I go out and look at them hoping they made it through another night.

Lindsey, you are the best gardner ever. Please keep us posted on how your tomatoe plants are doing. We just love to watch them grow! We will be over as soon as they turn red and ready to eat. Oh wait, we could do some fried green tomatoes.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE tomatoes and every attempt I have made to grow them has failed...MISERABLY. So Im going to try your idea next year. But in the mean time you could show me how much you like being my friend and let me have one of your tomatoes when they are red so that I can make me a toasted tomatoe sandwich this year:-)
